CPA and Bookkeeping Dallas AlternativeThe datesDates in Dallas keep coming while the books catch up.
The twentieth, the April property listing, and the May franchise report are watched with the monthly close, not handed to a second person in the spring. Steven Palmieri watches the twentieth, the April listing, and the May franchise report on this file, as Tax CFO and as the Entrepreneur's CFO.
Ask about a date
The twentieth does not move
The twentieth comes every month whether the books are ready or not. We watch it with the close, so the deposit and the report meet before filing day. A monthly filer sends Texas sales tax on the twentieth. Inside this city the receipt is eight and one quarter percent. Six and one quarter points are the state's, one point is the city's, and one point is DART's. Dallas County stays off that deposit, because the transit share already uses the local room on the receipt.
DART has been that 1 percent since 1984, and the member cities share it. If your shop is in Dallas, the transit piece is inside the same deposit your customer paid. We record that transit piece in the month the customer paid, so April is not the first time the deposit and the report meet.
A busy month around Fair Park, when the State Fair is on, can swell those deposits. The swell is still just sales. It still has a twentieth.
April and May on the property list
The appraisal district for this county, Dallas Central Appraisal District, values property for the city and for the other jurisdictions named on the same notice. Business property is listed in April, and a letter can push that listing into May. A protest usually belongs in May, and a notice that arrives late gives thirty days from the notice when that window is the longer one.
The list is easier when the books already know what you own. If the months are open, the list becomes a guessing game. We would rather close the months and then fill the list from them.
Hearings run long into the year when protest volume is heavy. Knowing your date is not the same as knowing your number. The figure on the notice still has to match the equipment the closed months already list.
The May franchise report
Texas franchise tax is a state report, due in May. For the 2026 and 2027 reports, the tax is zero when the measured amount does not exceed two million six hundred fifty thousand dollars. Retail and wholesale use three eighths of one percent, and every other business uses three quarters of one percent. Match the percentage to the year named on the report. This page is not the computation.
The federal return does not file the franchise report, and it does not file the property list. If those three live with three different people, May becomes a month of forwarding emails. One file keeps them in one place.
Hotels and short rentals in the city have a separate 9 percent city hotel tax on net room revenue, and they sign up with the city collector before the first guest stays. If that is you, say so. It does not belong in the same bucket as sales tax.
What we do with a date
We tell you which date is a filing, which date is a request you can still write, and which date is already past. Then we tie the filing to months that are closed, so the report and the year say the same thing.
You can look ahead to the next twentieth instead of dreading it. That is why those dates live beside the monthly close, not in a separate stack.
The State Fair says more than two million people come through Fair Park across those twenty four days, and we can enjoy that crowd the same as you do. Then we still file the sales report on the twentieth, because the crowd does not move the date.
Send the date that is open
Name the filing in front of you. We will tell you which months have to be closed first.
You will be talking to the Steven Palmieri practice.
